About the publisher: This work was a single published novel in three volumes. The 19th century was called "The Age of the Novel" and early publications such as this were extremely popular. Because of this demand, publishers began stretching out the publications into three separate volume to capitalize on the demand and gain a higher price, and therefore, a higher profit. Famous writers of the time, such as Scott (and later Dickens among others), were under contract for written works and the publishers often demanded that if the novel was insufficient in length, the author was obliged to extend the novel, hence, many novels are longer than originally planned by the author.
