Samuel Pitiscus.

7 ¾ x 4 ¾. In Latin. Printed by Trajecti ad Rhenum, Apud Franciscum Halmam, Guilielmum vands Water, Netherlands, 1696. FIRST EDITION. Complete. Original fine Dutch vellum binding. Some soiling to the boards and slightest hint of wear to extremities. Spine with manuscript titling. Red stained page edges. Marble pastedowns and end papers. Front paper neatly penned by previous owner “F. Sowels.” No bookplates or other ownership markings found. Frontispiece is probably by R. de Hooghe, or his disciple Schoonebeek. Featuring an engraved title page as well as a plethora of numismatic illustrations throughout, to include numerous illustrations of coins. A handsomely bound volume in relatively excellent condition, showing no serious wear, and the text quite smooth and clean. Remarkably free from foxing or staining, which suggest very high paper quality. A sound and very pleasing copy presenting an unmatched experience of early modern period history.

This is not only an elegantly printed, rare book, but it ranks among the best edited of the Variorum Classics in 8vo. Sextus Aurelius Victor (ca. 320 - ca. 390) was a historian and politician of the Roman Empire and author of a History of Rome from Augustus to Julian (360), published ca. 361, which has been translated, corrected and updated several times by various scholars. This copy includes, in part, the translation of a female editor, the renown French scholar and translator of the classics Annæ Tanaquili Fabri filiæ better known as Madame Anne Le Fèvre Dacier (1654 -17 August 1720).
