Full Title: De La Maniere d'Enseigner et d'Etudier Les Belles-Lettres; Par rapport a l’esprit & au coeur.
6 ½ x 4. In French. Printed by Chez les Freres Estienne, Paris, 1775. Nouvelle [New] Edition. Four Volumes. Complete. Speckled calf bindings in suburb condition. Corners lightly bumped. Eye-catching, uniform red edges. Spines with raised bands, morocco labels, and gilt lettering. Some light rubbing to small portions of the extremities. Save for a neatly applied bookplate to each volume, pastedowns and end papers free from ownership markings, foxing or staining, but with some minor offsetting from binder’s glue used for turn-ins. Half-title page to each volume. Text crisp and clean, though there may be the occasional page with some imperfection such as occasional foxing, a slight stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age. Otherwise a splendid, sound and very pleasing copy set indeed. (The image of a statue of Charles Rollin, on display at the Louvre, we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Charles Rollin (1661 – 1741) was a French historian and educator. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life, when he had been forbidden to teach given his belief in Jansenism (a Catholic theological movement, primarily in France, that emphasized original sin, human depravity, the necessity of divine grace, and predestination). His works were often criticized as uncritical and somewhat inaccurate, but they continued to instruct and interest multiple generations. A, perhaps, more original work was his “Traité des études,” which contains a summary of what was then a reformed and innovative system of education, discarding the medieval traditions that had lingered in France, emphasizing the study of national history after dropping Latin for vernacular in textbooks. If you respect anti-establishment personalities, then Rollin is for you.
