Description

The Epistolary Correspondence, Visitation Charges, Speeches, and Miscellanies, of the Right Reverend Francis Atterbury, D.D. Lord Bishop of Rochester; With Historical Notes (1783)

by Francis Atterbury

8 ¼ x 5 ¼. In English. Printed by and for J. Nichols, London, 1783. FIRST EDITION. Three Volumes. Complete. Fine polished calf bindings in suburb condition save for the front board of Volume III, which has a few wear marks, but nothing substantial. Board edges in a decorated guilt, which is somewhat unusual. Corners still sharp. Spines with raised bands and gilt lettering. Some light rubbing to small portions of the bands and extremities. Save for a pictorial bookplate of “Harry Lancelot Lee, Esq.” to each volume, pastedowns and end papers free from ownership markings or foxing, but with some minor offsetting from binder’s glue used for turn-ins. Text very crisp and clean, though there may be the occasional page with some imperfection such as occasional foxing, a slight stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age. Otherwise a splendid, sound and very pleasing copy set indeed. Trivial imperfections to the bindings. First editions are not commonly seen in the marketplace, so give this set serious consideration. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in any of the books.)

Francis Atterbury (1663 – 1732) was an English man of letters, politician and bishop. He was a noted wit and a gifted preacher. A High Church Tory and Jacobite, Atterbury gained patronage under Queen Anne, but was mistrusted by the Hanoverian Whig ministries, and was eventually banished. Some of his most remarkable protests, which appear in the journals of the peers, were drawn up by him; and, some of the bitterest of those pamphlets, which called on the English to stand up for their country against the aliens who had come from “beyond the seas” to oppress and plunder. When the rebellion of 1715 broke out, Atterbury refused to declare his attachment to the Protestant accession. In 1721, on the discovery of the plot to capture the royal family and the proclamation of "King James III", Atterbury was arrested and committed to the 'Tower of London' a year later. He carried on his correspondence so cautiously that the circumstantial proofs of his guilt, though sufficient to produce entire moral conviction, were not sufficient to justify legal conviction.
