Description

Biblical Spicilegio (1778)

by Alessio Simmaco Mazzocchi

Full Title: Spicilegii Biblici Tomus III. Novi Testamenti Libros Continentur.

11 ¼ x 8 ½. In Latin. Printed by Ex Regia Typographia, [Naples, Italy] (1778). Volume III. Complete. Very good vellum binding. Save for boards splitting at the head of front and rear joints (common for vellum), only the slightest hint of wear to extremities. Spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. Marble edges. Pastedowns, end papers, and text with virtually no signs of use. Wide margins. No ownership markings, and only occasional foxing, staining and browning. Copies are not commonly found in the marketplace. This one was certainly well-preserved. (The photographs of the author we included on our website are NOT in the book.)

Alessio Simmaco Mazzocchi (1684 – 1771) was an Italian biblical scholar, priest, philologist, and archaeologist. Born into a poor family, he struggled with 20 siblings (he, being the youngest), becoming an excellent student as a result. He mastered Greek, Latin, and Hebrew as well as showed a profound understanding of theology. He became a priest, achieving significant ranks within the Church. Having gained fame as a prominent biblical scholar and epigraphist, Ferdinand IV wanted him to hold the Chair of Sacred Scriptures and Theology at the Royal University. In his spare time, Mazzocchi became interested in the study of the ruins and ancient texts, often denouncing and avoiding any form of abuse and damage to historical works. We, here, at Clifford’s Rare Books, certainly second that motion!
