Johann Christoph Kocher (1699 - 1772) was a German Lutheran clergyman and theologian. He attended school in Gera (a city in the German state of Thuringia) and from 1716 studied theology at the University of Jena, where he lived with the theologian Michael Fortsch (1654–1724). After an interruption to his studies, he received his doctorate in 1722 and from then on gave lectures at the University of Jena.
In 1729 he was appointed rector of the Ratsgymnasium in Osnabrück. In 1737, at the inauguration of the University of Gottingen, Kocher received his theological PhD. In 1742, he became Superintendent of the Schools and Churches in Braunschweig as well as a member of the Consistory there. In 1751, he received a call to the theological faculty of the University of Jena and was rector of the University several times. Kocher became a church councilor in Weimar in 1771. He is the author of numerous writings.
