7 7/8 x 5. In French. Printed for Hôtel de Thou, Rue des Poitevins, Paris, 1780. FIRST EDITION. Thirteenth volume of a larger set. Mottled calf with clean boards. Corners slightly bumped. Spine with raised bands, slightly worn, and gilt lettering in compartments. Red edges a shade less than bright with two small, minor stains. Marble pastedowns, front with pictorial bookplate of “William Haggerston Constable, Esq.” Front end paper, slightly loose, with a few stains opposite half title page. Isolated, trivial foxing in the text, but otherwise a very good copy. Binding without significant wear, and the leaves almost entirely quite fresh and clean. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

Jean-François de La Harpe (1739 – 1803) was a critic and unsuccessful playwright who wrote severe and provocative criticisms and histories of French literature. “Abrégé de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages,” was a diversion, covering voyages in South and Central America, to include Guiana, Brazil, and Panama. Illustrations by Bernard Direxit.
