Description
ISAGOGE in Libros Ecclesiarum Lutheranarum Symbolicos . . . (1725)
by Johann Benedikt Carpzov / Benedicti Carpzovii / Benedicto Carpzov
Full Title: ISAGOGE in Libros Ecclesiarum Lutheranarum Symbolicos, I. Tria Symbola Oecumenica, II. Augustanam Confessionem ejusque Apologiam, III. Articulos Smalcaldicos, IV. & V. Utrumque Catechismum Lutheri, VI. Formulam Concordiae : Opus Posthumum
8 x 7 x 4 ¼ In Latin. Published by J. Ch. Zimmermann, & J.N. Gerlach in Dresdeae [Dresden, Germany], 1725. Early edition. 1,780 pgs., excluding a massive 150+ pgs. index. Complete. Full vellum binding. Some minor damage at fore edge of front cover. Rather minor. Book fully intact. Vellum otherwise faintly dulled, a hint of rubbing to extremities, but still rather bright and clean for a book of this size and age. Spine, joints, and hinges are excellent. This book was “Built RAM Tough.”
A few, small ownership markings on front and rear pastedowns and front endpaper. Maybe some trivial, isolated light marginal soiling here and there to the text block. Excellent paper stock used. Virtually NO foxing. Mostly crisp and clean throughout, though there may be the occasional page with some other slight imperfection such as a slight stain, tiny tear, fold, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age and size. Overall, a handsome copy, indeed. Well preserved and certainly an appealing 18th century artifact. Early editions are not commonly seen in the marketplace. Very scarce in commerce.
Originally published in 1665 / 1675. (See below.). Title loosely translated, “Books of the Lutheran Church Symbolism. I. Three Ecumenical Symbols; II. The Augustan Confession and its Apology; III. Smalkaldic Articles (A military alliance of Lutheran princes within the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-16th century.); IV. & V. Both Luther's Catechism; VI. Form of Concord.
Johann Benedikt Carpzov (1607 – 1657) was a German theologian. He became archdeacon of St. Thomas's church at Leipzig. He was a Professor Extraordinarius, and in 1646, Professor Ordinarius of Theology at Leipzig. He died in 1657. Carpzov was noted for piety as well as for learning. His chief writings are “De Ninivitarum Poenitentia” (Leipzig, 1640); “Hodegeticum” (1656; enlarged by his son, J. B., 1689); “ISAGOGE in Libros Ecclesiarum Lutheranarum Symbolicos,” which was completed after his death by Olearius (1665; 1675.). In view of this book, Gass calls Carpzov the "first really distinguished laborer in Symbolics" (Gescichte d. Prot. Dogmatik, 1:172).
