Description
Histoires Diverses D'Elien, Traduites Du Grec, Avec Des Remarques. (1772)
by Claude Elien, Elien le sophiste
8 x 5. In French. Published by A Paris: Chez Moutard, Libraire de Mad. La Dauphine, 1772. FIRST EDITION. 520 pgs. Complete. Small chip at bottom of spine, moderate wear to joints and extremities. Joints (outside) a bit flaked, leather just slightly crackled, the rather attractive binding sturdy. Text block with no signs of use. No ownership markings. No foxing. Excellent paper stock used. Overall, a fine and handsome copy, the binding sound, virtually as new internally. Early editions are not commonly seen in the marketplace.
One of the first annuals in history of a compilation of anecdotes on various subjects (including all the characters of Greek antiquity) collected by Greek-speaking Romans from the 3rd century AD. For a contemporary reader into fantasy, this is this book's most salient feature.
