Description
A Manuscript Copy of Veni Creator Spiritus and Papal Commentaries (1796)
5 x 3 ¾. Minor to moderate wear to marbled cardboard binding and holding quite well. Six pages (or three leaves) with handwritten text. Pink paste downs with one front end paper and two in the rear. Some trivial staining present with only trace foxing. Generally clean and bright throughout. An appealing artifact.
This is a small and short manuscript from the late 18th century, featuring Latin text of the hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus” (Come, Creator Spirit), as well as news relating to the short pontifical of May 26, 1796 on Pope Pius VI.
The hymn was believed to have been written by Rabanus Maurus around the 9th century. In the original Latin text, it has been historically sung in Gregorian Chant. It has been translated into several languages, often as a hymn for Pentecost.
