Text block mostly crisp and clean, though there may be the occasional leaf with some other slight imperfection such as a slight stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age. A mid-18th century edition of “The Stations of the Cross,” otherwise known as “The Way of Sorrows or the Via Crucis,” being a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and the accompanying prayers. Generally, the stations are a set of 14, beginning with the death sentence of Jesus, to his Crucifixion, to his laying in the tomb. However, this edition unusually begins with ‘The Last Supper’ and ends with the ‘Resurrection of Jesus.

Adrien Parvilliers (1619 – 1678) was a Jesuit, Arabist, and French Missionary. He was highly regarded by both the intellectual elite and the common people for his mastery of Arabic, for his ability to read books that even the imams of the mosques only partially understood, and for his knowledge of astrology and mathematics that made him famous among both Turks and Greeks. Parvilliers’ devotional work, “Les Stations de Jerusalem, pour Servir d'Entretien sur aa Passion de N. S. Jesus-Christ” (offered here) became famous, which had numerous French editions and was translated into English, German, Spanish, Breton, Polish and Dutch.
