Description

Lettres Choisies De Messieurs De L'Académie Françoise . . . (1709)

by Charles Perrault

Full Title: Lettres Choisies de Messieurs de L'Académie Françoise, Sur Toutes Sortes de Sujets. Avec la Traduction des Fables de Faerne.

5 ¾ x 3 ¼. In French. Published by Chez Nicolas Forster, Paris, 1709. Second Edition. 608 pgs, complete with an exceptionally rare engraved Frontis of King Louis XIV and an index of each letter and story to the rear. Calf binding. Spine with five raised bands, significantly worn at head and tail, but with no loss to integrity. Paper label missing. Light wear to joints and extremities. Front board loosening but still firmly intact. Corners with minor to moderate bumping. Title page as well as rear endpaper and pastedown with previous ownership markings. Text block a shade less than bright. Isolated, light marginal soiling. Still an altogether agreeable copy internally. Not without issues, but an appealing copy of a very collectible AND RARE title.

This 1709 copy has a rare portrait engraving of King Louis XIV with an inscription "Louis XIV Roi de France et de Navarre," translated “King Louis XIV Ruler of France and Navarre.” The first 400 pages are letters from Charles Perrault to the French Academy regarding faculty needs and changes to the academy. The latter 208 pages are dedicated to short stories, also from Perrault.

First published in 1708. Charles Perrault (1628 – 1703) was a member of the Academy of France and author of many short stories. He laid the beginning foundations of the fairy tale, a new literary genre, and is known for stories such as "The Little Red Riding Hood," "Puss in Boots," "Cinderella," and "The Sleeping Beauty." ** The color image of the author found on our website is not in the book. **
