Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831 – 1891) was an English statesman and poet (under the pen name Owen Meredith). He served as Viceroy of India between 1876 and 1880, during which time Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India. When Lytton was twenty-five years old, he published in London a volume of poems under the name of Owen Meredith. He went on to publish several other volumes under the same name. The most popular one is "Lucile", a story in verse published in 1860.

Between 1876 and 1931, the Crowell company issued “Lucile” in a great variety of printings and bindings, on the order of 200 identifiably different formats. After 1884, most of the series bindings in which “Lucile” appeared were illustrated in the catalogs Crowell submitted annually to Publishers' Trade List Annual. First published in 1860, “Lucile,” is a poem is a narrative told in an anapaest meter. It was Meredith's most popular work, achieving wide popularity in the 19th century, despite accusations of plagiarism.
