Description
The Poetical Works of Samuel Johnson (1785)
by Samuel Johnson
Full Title: The Poetical Works of Samuel Johnson, L.L.D. Now First Collected in One Volume
6 ½ x 4. In English. Printed for L. White, P. Byrne, and R. Marchbank, Dublin, 1785. FIRST EDITION reprint of FIRST English Edition. Complete. Full sprinkled calf, flat spine divided into panels by single gilt rule. Red morocco label, both fading and slightly loose with gilt title, “Johnson Poetry.” Corners lightly bumped. Wear to head and tail. Front joint starting, but still solid. Save for the rear, pastedowns and end papers free from ownership markings or foxing, but with some minor offsetting from binder’s glue used for turn-ins. Text mostly crisp and clean, though there may be the occasional page with some imperfections such as occasional foxing, a slight stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age. Two leaves, rather random, show a heavy stain. Still an EXCELLENT COPY overall, the text fresh and the binding in-tact. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Samuel Johnson (1709 – 84) was an English author. Beginning as a Grub Street journalist, he made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, novelist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson has been described as arguably the most distinguished “man of letters” in English history. This work, originally published in the year following Johnson's death (edited by George Kearsley), was presented to the public in February 1785. The present edition, for sale here, announced in May of that year, is essentially a reprinting of it, including the printing mistakes. A "New edition," based on the text of the first issue of Kearsley's London edition was published around the Fall of 1785, with corrections. The “New Edition” was also considered the Second Edition, maintaining this Dublin printing a true FIRST.
