Description
Western Characters or Types of Border Life in the Western States (1853)
by J. L. McConnel
7 ½ x 5 ¼. In English. Published by Redfield, New York, 1853. FIRST EDITION. 378 pgs. Two frontispiece illustrations and a page catalog of J. S. Refield publications. With illustrations. Brown cloth hardcover ruled in blind on the covers with faded gilt title lettering and gilt illustration on the spine. Restored. Cloth spine rebacked on darker mulberry paper. Cloth edge worn head and base of spine. Hinges strengthened. Previous owner inscription on the right front flyleaf mostly erased. Faint inscription on the rear end sheet. An overall decent and scarce copy of true Americana.
The author takes you right to the mid-19th century, with uncanny antidotes of “THE INDIAN,” “THE VOYAGEUR,” and “THE PIONEER.” As societies were built, he addresses law and order with “THE RANGER,” “THE REGULATOR,” and “THE JUSTICE OF THE PEACE.” “THE PEDDLER” has his place as does “THE SCHOOLMASTER” and “THE SCHOOLMISTRESS.” And, of course, one cannot be out done without “THE POLITICIAN.”
