Hints on the National Bankruptcy of Britain, And On Her Resources to Maintain the Present Contest with France (1809)

by John Bristed

8 ½ x 5 ½. In English. Published by Ezra Sargeant, New York, 1809. FIRST EDITION. 688 pp. Verified complete via WorldCat. Tree calf, gilt-lettered red leather label and gilt ruling to spine. Slight rubbing and edgewear to covers, with cracking to exterior hinges, especially front hinge – though the book is quite firmly bound. Otherwise, apart from a few pages with slight marginal soiling, a VERY GOOD copy. Clean, bright, and an unmarked rare issue. Scarce in commerce.

An important, rare, early nineteenth century American commentary on Britain, with a focus on the economics of its Napoleonic Wars with France. Also includes considerable discussion of American politics, trade, the militia system, and its Revolutionary War. John Bristed (1778–1855) was an English-born clergyman in the protestant Episcopalian church in the US and a prolific author. He was the father of noted American literary critic Charles Astor Bristed (1820–1874). Other works include Edward and Anna (1809); An Oration on the Utility of Literary Establishments (1814); America and Her Resources (1818); and Thoughts on the Anglican and American-Anglo Churches (1822).
