by James Grahame

Full Title: The History of the Rise and Progress of the United States of North America, Till the British Revolution in 1688.

9 x 5 ½. In English. Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, London, 1827. FIRST EDITION. Two Volumes. 531 pp. and 528 pp. Original publishers tan paper covered boards. Restored. New brown cloth spines preserving original spine labels. Light shelf wear to extremities. Untrimmed foredges. Light to moderate scattered foxing to contents. Both volumes have ownership labels on the front paste downs "Kennebec Historical Society from the Library of Hon. Joseph H. Williams 1814-1896." Also, an old ink signature of “Joseph H. Williams” located underneath the labels. Overall, a SLENDID and SCARCE COPY with provenance.

This work by Grahame is a detailed and well written history of the first century of colonization in America. It addresses early explorers, settlement of the Pilgrim Fathers, Virginia, Massachusetts Bay, Pequod Wars, French and Indian Wars, the capture and loss of Quebec and Acadia, Hudson's voyage, William Penn's settlement, wars with the French, etc. Perhaps most interesting is this copy was once owned by Joseph H. Williams, who was briefly the Governor of Maine from 1857-1858.
