Description
A History of Naval Tactics from 1530 to 1930 : The Evolution of Tactical Maxims (1942)
by Rear Admiral S.S. Robison, US Navy (Retired) and Mary L. Robison
9 ½ x 6 ¼. In English. Published by The United States Naval Institute, Annapolis, Maryland, 1942. FIRST EDITION. 956 pp. Verified complete via WorldCat. Probably the most comprehensive study of the development of naval tactics over the four centuries through 1930. Hardcover. Publisher's blue cloth. Trivial shelf wear to extremities, mostly to head and tail of the spine and board corners. End papers, pastedowns, and text block bright throughout save for light tide marks at the bottom of the block throughout, most prominent in a few mid-section leaves as well as in the rear – and all rather inconsequential. Free from ownership markings save for a “Government Property” stamp to the front fly and rear pastedown, which gives it some appeal, perhaps provenance given its association with the US Naval Academy. Copiously illustrated throughout. Collated, complete with black and white photos, art, and eight illustrated charts, seven of which are folding. An overall nice, collectible copy.
From ships, guns, and gunnery of the 14th and 15th centuries to tactical discussions made in the early 20th century, a scarce copy of this fascinating history of naval tactics by the notable United States Navy Officer, Admiral Samuel Shelburne Robison and his wife, Mary L. Robison. Robison held several major commands during World War I, and from 1928-1931, he served as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. After retiring, Robison also founded a Naval Preparatory Academy in Pine Beach, New Jersey, called the 'Admiral Farragut Academy.’
