Samuel Foote (1720 – 1777) was a British dramatist, actor and theatre manager from Cornwall. He was known for his comedic acting and writing. He was born into wealth, providing opportunity to hone a wit and sense of humor he developed while being raised in an eccentric family. (He turned the loss of his leg in a riding accident in 1766 to comedic opportunity.) He was an undisciplined student, ultimately being disenrolled by Oxford. He eventually settled down and acquired classical training which enabled him to turn a classical quotation or allusion and helped to give to his prose style a certain fluency and elegance as an author and playwright. Foote flirted with debt, marital discord, alleged abuse and legal troubles throughout his life.
