VERY RARE, original quarter brown paper over olive paper boards. Original printed spine label. Joints excellent. Light wear to extremities, mostly head and tail of spine as well as light to moderate bumping to corners. Moderate to heavy foxing to pastedowns and endpapers, a few of which are ripped. Title page with heavy foxing, though trivial to the engraved frontispiece portrait of Jones (protected by tissue). Text block with light to moderate foxing throughout. Uncut leaves. No ownership markings save for short inscription to top of the title page. Overall, a SLENDID COPY.
The first biography of John Paul Jones by then Register of the U.S. Navy, John Henry Sherburne. Based on documents, letters, logs, journals, and more provided by President Thomas Jefferson and others. The frontispiece is the first reproduction of the famous portrait of Jones done by Charles Wilson Peale. Very important biography, RARE in its original publisher’s binding. Great presentation appeal and a must for any collector of Americana / Revolutionary War. Preserved in a mylar dust jacket cover.
