6 ¼ x 4. In French. Printed for A La Haye, Chez Henri Constapel, Libraire, 1762. Two volumes in one. FIRST EDITION. Complete. Contemporary mottled calf. Spine with five raised bands, a little chipped to the extremities. Binding with minor, at worst, scuffing. Corners lightly bumped, one nearly to the board. Volumes I with a false title, frontispiece, title page, [iv], 233 pages, and 14 engraved plates. Volume II with a title page, 237 pages, [xi], folding map, and an engraved plate. Text in very good condition, with some yellowing and occasional light foxing. A sound and very pleasing copy in excellent shape for its age.
Complete set of two volumes with engraved plates showing different military tactics of ancient armies (Roman, Spartan, Macedonian, Carthaginian, Persian) in famous ancient battles featuring Julius Caesar, Filip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great, Darius the Great, Hannibal, Lacedaemon, and Scipio the African. Jean-Henri Maubert de Gouvest was born in 1721, Rouen, France, and died in 1767, Hamburg, Germany. He was an adventurer who was successful spy, artillery officer, and later, a tutor, historian, journalist, as well as the Director of the Comédie-Française, one of the few state theatres in France today and considered the oldest still-active theatre in the world.
