A classic work in Latin compiled by the Spanish Renaissance humanist Pedro Juan Núñez, who studied at the University of Valencia, earning a doctorate in Arts in 1550. He published his first book in 1552. Núñez was a Hellenist, which meant we was a person who lived with Greek language, outlook, and way of life but was not Greek in ancestry. He was also a Peripatetic philosopher, a rhetorician, and a critical editor, publishing books on all these topics. Although he always declared himself an Aristotelian philosopher, Núñez changed his views from his initial Ramism, at least on rhetoric, to the Hermogenean tradition. It is difficult to follow the steps of this evolution, because of a lack of publications between his 1556 “Apposita M.T. Ciceronis collecta Petro Ioanne Nunnesio Valentino” (Valencia) and this title, which was published in Venice. Perhaps, there is a connection between the Ramistic views and the Hermogenean tradition, at least on the concepts of method and the development of an elaborated elocution. Núñez eventually devoted his life to teaching philosophy, Greek, and rhetoric at the universities of Valencia, Zaragoza, and Barcelona.
