John Faithhorn was for a time a surgeon with the East India Company before opening his own practice in London. This present work was intended to serve as a popular treatise on liver function, drawing much from William Saunder's work on the liver, which had been first published in 1803. Faithhorn's work proved popular and ran to four editions before being first published in the United States in 1820.
PROVENANCE
Julius Friedenwald (1866 – 1941) was a very successful gastroenterologist and writer. He was born into an American Jewish family in Baltimore, MD. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University and practiced medicine in his hometown for over fifty years. Friedenwald studied medicine and gastroenterology in Berlin, Paris, Vienna, and London before returning to Baltimore to establish what became a very large medical practice. He served as the President of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). He was also a fellow of the American Medical Association, member of the American College of Physicians, and associate member of the American Association of Physicians. The “Julius Friedenwald Medal” was established in 1941 to recognize individuals who made lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology.
