Dr. Coxe studied in Edinburgh and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. He became a professor of chemistry at the University from 1809 – 1818, and a professor of materia medica and pharmacy from 1818 – 1835. Even before joining the University of Pennsylvania, he was regarded by many as the father of pharmacy in Philadelphia. This present work is one of the earliest American drug compendia. It is believed to be the very first attempt at a standardizing description of drugs and their preparation for specific medical use in the United States. ** Dr. Coxe was also an early and enthusiastic advocate of vaccination. **
