Description
Reflections on the Works of God, and of His Providence, Throughout All Nature, For Every Day in the Year. (1791)
Translated from the German of Mr. [Christoph Christian] C. C. Sturm. By A Lady
7 x 4 ¼. In English. Published by J and J Robinson, London, 1791. A New Edition. [Believed to be the Third English Edition]. First published in German in 1777. Verified complete in three volumes via WorldCat. Volume I, 334 pp.; Volume II, pp 363 pp.; Volume III, 358 pp. Features the bookplate of “Captain Cumby, Royal Navy,” who distinguished himself at the Battle of Trafalgar. Late-18th century original, full calf bindings, restored. All boards reconditioned and reattached to frayed spines. Edges and corners with negligible wear. Pastedowns and endpapers generally bright. Text block mostly crisp, though there may be the occasional page with some imperfection such as occasional foxing, a slight stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age and use.
Overall, a handsome and very collectible copy. The text generally fresh and the bindings now sound. All volumes protected with mylar protective covers and stored in a custom; open-faced shell tailored to the style of all three volumes. Christoph Christian Sturm (1740–1786) was a German preacher and author, best known for this title, one that is truly very scarce in commerce and, this set, with very significant provenance.
Provenance: From the library of Captain William Pryce Cumby, an officer in the Royal Navy, whose "excellent service" during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars was highlighted when he was thrust into the limelight following his service at the Battle of Trafalgar. During the battle the French almost took his vessel, the HMS Bellerophon, a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. This was ultimately the ship aboard which Napoleon finally surrendered, ending 22 years of nearly continuous war with France. Given the nature of books as well as the deteriorated condition of the bindings, this set could have accompanied Captain Cumby while serving aboard the Bellerophon.
