Hannah’s “A View of Religions” is an alphabetical catalog of religious denominations describing their origins and the salient points of their belief systems. It includes sections on notable denominations such as Quakers, Shakers, Baptists, and Dunkers, as well as more obscure ones such as Apollinarians and Schwenkfeldians. Following this is an account of religious groups specific to various nations by State within the United States. Originally published in 1784, including among its subscribers Vice President John Adams, Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams, attorney John Q. [Quincy] Adams, Rev. Jeremiah Belknap, and John Hancock.
Hannah Adams was a distant relative of US President John Adams and, according to the ‘Dictionary of American Biography,’ most likely also the first woman in America to earn a living as a writer. This work was undertaken primarily to alleviate her financial situation at the time and marked the beginning of her success in the profession.
