A fascinating biographical account of Colonel John Hutchinson, a Puritan leader and prominent Roundhead in the English Civil War. Originally written by his wife Lucy Hutchinson at the time of his death, to which she added an autobiography. Lucy was an English biographer as well as probably the first English translator of the complete text of Lucretius's “De Rerum Natura” (he was a Roman poet and philosopher). Lucy’s account of her husband throws light upon the characteristics and conditions of the of the Puritans and the lives they led. Intended only for the author's family, it was printed by a descendant in 1806, in an attempt to clear many false impressions about the narrowness and austerity of the educated Puritans.

Hudson Gurney (1775 – 1864) was an English antiquary and verse-writer, also known as a politician. After inheriting a fortune from his father in 1811, Gurney briefly flirted with politics, with his most prominent success being appointed High Sheriff of Norfolk from 1835 – 1836. He was elected “Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries” on 12 March 1818. Gurney contributed many hundreds of pounds to the society for the publication of Anglo-Saxon works. He also wrote, first publishing a privately printed “English History and Chronology in Rhyme.” Gurney also published “Heads of Ancient History” (1814); “Memoir of Thomas Young, M.D.” (1831); and "Orlando Furioso" (1843). He also possessed a library of from ten to fifteen thousand volumes. This copy, for sale here, is presumed to have been a part.
