George III (George William Frederick; 1738 – 1820) was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 1760 until the union of the two countries in 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death in 1820. His life and reign were marked by a series of military conflicts with much of Europe, and places farther afield in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Early in his reign, Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, becoming the dominant European power in North America and India. However, many of Britain's American colonies were soon lost during the American War of Independence.

Robert Macfarlan (1734 – 1804) was a Scottish schoolmaster, known as a writer, journalist and translator. He was engaged by Thomas Evans the publisher, of Paternoster Row, to write a history of the reign of George III, the first volume of which was issued in 1770. Evans then fell out with Macfarlan, and employed another writer to continue the work. A second volume appeared in 1782 and a third in 1794. After reconciling with Evans, Macfarlan wrote, in 1796, a fourth volume, which was severely handled by the critics. His account of the king's mental state was frank, by the public standards of the time. Macfarlan defended himself in an “Appendix, or the Criticks Criticized,” London, 1797.
