Description

The London Magazine; or, Gentleman’s Monthly Intelligencer (1735)

8 x 5. In English. Printed by C. Ackers for T. Cox, J. Clarke and T. Astley, London, 1735. FIRST EDITION. 729 pp. Original, Cambridge-style full calf. Moderate shelf wear to boards. Hinges artfully rejointed and corners recently repaired. Spine with five raised bands. Original red morocco label missing, but gilted “1735” still plainly evident. Front pastedown with pictorial bookplate of “George Gibbs.” Pastedowns, endpapers and half-title page with offsetting from binder’s glue used for turn-ins. Title page is bright and clean. Text slightly browned, but with virtually no signs of use. Isolated and trivial soiling. Overall, a sound and VERY PLEASING copy.

“The London Magazine” is a publication of society, politics, military, trade, arts, literature, religion, foreign affairs, and miscellaneous interests. It is the second oldest literary periodical, founded in 1732 in political opposition and rivalry to the Tory-based “Gentleman's Magazine,” running for 53 years until its initial closure in 1785. Offered here is a volume for the year 1735. It includes, bound together, 12 issues for the months of January through December, plus an Appendix and an Index.
