This chronicle of Philip of Spain (1527 – 1598) was the first published study of the King and the only publication by Robert Watson (1730 – 1781), a Scottish minister, academic, and historian. Philip’s reign, which encompassed wars with France, England (including the fateful defeat of the Spanish Armada), revolts in Spain’s Lowland holdings, and fierce persecution of Protestants. Until superseded by Prescott, Watson’s account was definitive in its day. It earned the praise of Horace Walpole and achieved considerable popularity, going through seven editions and translated into three languages following its first 1777 publication.

The Dampierre family, originally from Dampiere and Orne, Normandy, lived in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. While many of the Dampierres emigrated to the North American colonies in order to escape the political chaos in Britain at this time, making invaluable contributions to the development of the cultures of the United States and Canada, notable members, to include Auguste Marie Henri Picot de Dampierre, French Divisional General, and Achille Pierre Henri Picot de Dampierre, a French Brigadier General, both served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars from 1789 to 1815.
