Description
Maximou Turiou Logoi. Maximi Tyrii Dissertationes. (1703)
by Cassius Maximus Tyrius
7 ¾ x 4 ¾. In Latin and Greek. Published by Ex Officina Joann. Hayes, Celeberrimae Academiae Typographi, Cantabrigiae, 1703. Complete EARLY EDITION of Tyre’s collected work of lectures on theological, ethical and philosophical subjects (translated, “The Dissertations”). Full, mottled calf. Spine with five raised bands, elaborate gilt in compartments. Black label with bright gilt title, “MAXIMI TYRII.” Joints and hinges strong, though light flaking is present. Boards in very good+ condition with some scuffing on lower right corner of rear board. Marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Red edges. Text block shows no signs of use, remarkably clean from cover-to-cover. A HANDSOME COPY. Though trivial imperfections to the binding, the text is still as bright as when it was first printed. Believed to be first published in 1677, early editions are not commonly seen in the marketplace.
Maximus of Tyre, also known as Cassius Maximus Tyrius, was a Greek rhetorician and philosopher who lived in the time of the Antonines and Commodus. He belonged to the trend of the Second Sophistic. His writings contain many allusions to the history of Greece. There is little reference to Rome, thus it is inferred that he lived longer in Greece, perhaps as a professor at Athens. Although nominally a Platonist, Tyrius is really an Eclectic and one of the precursors of Neoplatonism. In “The Dissertations,” his lectures were once described as “simply eloquent exhortations to virtue decked out in quotations, chiefly from Plato, and Homer.”
