Description

Poems and Translations (1727)

by Christopher Pitt

7 ¾ x 5. In English. Printed for Bernard Lintot, at the Cross-Key between the Temple-Gates, in Fleetstreet; and Arthur Bettesworth, at the Red Lion in Pater-Noster-Row, London, 1727. FRIST EDITION. Complete. Cambridge-style, polished calf and corners in suburb condition. Raised bands, with lovely gilt short-title in an upper compartment. Single, tiny worm hole near the tail joint. Front pictorial pastedown with light pencil marks, ever-so slight worm damage near lower hinge, and defect-free bookplate of “Robert J. Hayhurst." Mild, marginal foxing on a few pages, to include the last few pages in the upper corner. Rear endpaper with mild soiling in the upper corner accompanied with a single, tiny worm hole, not affecting text. Otherwise a handsome copy, without any perceivable wear that is especially well-preserved internally. As FINE as any early 18th century FIRST EDITION as one could possibly find. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

Christopher Pitt (1699 – 1748), a Late Fellow of New College in Oxford, was an English rector, poet and translator, perhaps best known for the latter. He his best known for his translation of Virgil and Marco Girolamo Vida. Poems and Translations was Pitt’s principal book of original verse, mostly written when he was very young. It includes a poem addressed to Alexander Pope, who was best known for his translation of Homer.
