Description
Vita, ed Opere Spirituali del beato Errico Susone religioso estatico, dell'ordine di S. Domenico (1721)
by Ignazio Del Nente; Heinrich Seuse
9 x 6 ¾. In Italian. Printed for Venezia: per Giuseppe Corona a S. Caterina(IS), Corona, Giuseppe, 1721. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated. Complete. An 18th-century printing of the mystical teachings and writings of Heinrich Seuse, a Medieval Dominican Monk. Binding is tight and secure. Vellum over paper boards, the front of which is slightly separating at the lower corner, though still very much intact. Assumed to have been referenced extensively. The vellum is moderately soiled, which gives it an appeal. Title page vignette with early marbled block edges. An altogether agreeable copy, the text block is bright and the binding sound. This work is extremely scarce. Not commonly seen in the marketplace.
Henry Suso, O.P. (also, Heinrich Seuse) was a German Dominican friar and the most popular vernacular writer of the fourteenth century (when considering the number of surviving manuscripts). An important author in both Latin and Middle High German, he is also notable for defending Meister Eckhart's legacy after Eckhart was posthumously condemned for heresy in 1329. He died in 1366 and was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1831. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
