7 ½ x 4 ¾ x 2. In Latin. Published by Leiden: Lugduni Batavorum, ex Officina Hackiana, 1674. Early Edition. Illustrated. Complete. Original vellum binding with faded manuscript titling to the head of the spine. Minimal soiling with crisp corners. Illustrated with various decorative woodcut devices and initials, as well as a stunning added engraved title page, which has a moderate, rather inconsequential tear at the bottom. Text block is bright, though there may be the occasional page with a slight imperfections or other minor quirks that come with a book this age. An excellent overall copy, the binding is near-fine and internally fresh and clean. This is a rare early copy of the Leiden edition, published with all six parts in one. Very scarce.
John Barclay was a Scottish writer, satirist and neo-Latin poet. With his satirical social criticism, Barclay presents a broad peak satirical, concentrating mostly on the character of Europeans at the time. His famous "Satyricon” lampoons his enemies, Jesuits, Puritans, as well as individuals. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
