Pvb. Virgilii Maronis Opera : studio Th. Pvlmani correcta. (1624)
Description
Pvb. Virgilii Maronis Opera : studio Th. Pvlmani correcta. (1624)
by Publius Vergilius Maro (Virgil)
4 ¼ x 2 ¼. In Latin. Published by Guily: Janssonium, Amsterdam, 1624. Early Edition. This is a very scarce miniature edition of Virgil, his complete works in the original Latin, as edited by the eminent Renaissance philologist and classicist Theodor Poelman. It is complete, with a lovely engraved title page showing Aeneas in full Roman armor; the Carthaginian Queen Dido flanking the title; and above is a bust of Virgil. Binding is tight and secure. Hinges great. The vellum is moderately soiled, particularly at head and tail of the spine, which gives it an appeal. The text block is remarkably fresh and bright. Overall, an agreeable copy. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BC – 19 BC), or Virgil, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. This quite comprehensive edition not only includes the Bucolics, Georgics and the great Aeneid of Virgil, in his inestimable Latin, but also his obscure and probably spurious, but quite enjoyable Culex and Ciris. It also includes a life of Virgil by the Roman grammarian (Tiberius) Claudius Donatus. This miniature edition was designed to be carried and read by scholars, diplomats and the educated on their travels. Virgil was one of the authors most admired and read during the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Europe. He flourished during the reign of Augustus Caesar, the Golden Age of Rome and of Latin literature, which, some say, he literally revolutionized.
