Description
Joh. Fred. Gronovii. Ad L. & M. Annaeos Senecas Notae. (1658)
by Johann Friedrich Gronovius
5 ½ x 3. In Latin. Published by Apud Ludovicum & Danielem Elzevirios, Amstelodami [ELZEVIR Press], 1658. Early Edition. First published by Elzevir in 1649. Complete. Bound in old cream vellum. Minor soiling on upper spine. Woodcut printer's mark of Louis and Daniel Elzevier depicting Minerva under an olive tree is on the title page. She holds a banner with the motto: 'Ne extra oleas', to be understood as 'Stay within the bounds of wisdom'. The Amsterdam Elseviers produced more than 600 editions, and 256 of them have this motto. Text block is mostly very crisp and clean, though there may be the occasional page with a slight imperfection such as a trivial stain, tiny tear, or other minor quirk that comes with a book this age. An excellent overall copy, the binding a bit bowed, but solid and pleasing and internally fresh and clean. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Johann Friedrich Gronovius (1611 – 1671) was a German classical scholar, librarian and critic. Born in Hamburg, he studied at several universities and travelled in England, France and Italy. In 1643, he was appointed professor of rhetoric and history at Deventer. In 1665, Gronovius succeeded Antonius Thysius the Younger as the 6th Librarian of Leiden University. He edited and annotated Statius, Plautus, Livy, Tacitus, Aulus Gellius and Seneca's tragedies. This book contains his notes on Seneca's “Dialogues, Letters, Quaestiones, and the Apocolocyntosis.” His notes on Seneca's father's works, "Suasoriae" and "Controversiae,” start on p. 352.
About the printer: Elzevir is the name of a celebrated family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. They became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles, who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these tiny books. Though their Greek and Hebrew impressions are considered inferior to those of the Aldines and the Estiennes, the famous Elzevir small editions (in 12mo, 16mo and 24mo) were beloved for their elegance of design, neatness, regularity of type, and, ultimately, utility and portability.
