9 x 6. In English. Published by Phillips, Sampson and Company, Boston, 1859. Early edition. Three volumes. Complete. Calf over marbled boards. Five raised bands. Gilt titles to red and brown morocco labels. Minor to moderate shelf wear to boards and hinges, particularly to the front board of the first volume. Bindings tight and secure. Sharp corners Spines rather unblemished. Marble pastedowns, endpapers, and text block edges in fine condition. No bookplates or ownership markings of any kind. Not ex-library. Title pages rather foxed from frontis engravings, otherwise an excellent copy internally. A sound and very pleasing set, the text quite smooth and clean. Heavier than a typical book of this size. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Prescott’s works on the subject, “The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic” (1837), “The History of the Conquest of Mexico” (1843), “A History of the Conquest of Peru” (1847), and the unfinished “History of the Reign of Phillip the Second” (1856–1858) have become classic works in the field, and have had a great impact on the study of both Spain and Mesoamerica.
