Description

The Dictes And Sayings Of The Philosophers (1477) [Facsimile Incunable] (1887)

by Caxton William

11 ¾ x 8 ½. In English. Published by Elliot Stock, London, 1877. FIRST EDITION. Complete. Full calf leather with blind stamped covers. Tight and secure. Trivial flaking to front hinge and two very small stuffs on the rear board. Corners lightly bumped. Clean pastedowns and endpapers. No ownership bookplates or markings. Not ex-library. Half-title page with some minor overall browning. Finely reproduced in black and venetian red throughout with a preface by William Blades. Text block is clean and crisp, with virtually no signs of use. A SPLENDID COPY, little changed from the day it left the press. (The image of the Caxton we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

This is a facsimile edition of the first printed book in England by William Caxton (1422 – 1491) in 1477. He was an English merchant, diplomat, and writer. Caxton is thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England, in 1476, and as a printer was the first English retailer of printed books. This copy was published in 1877 - NOT a print on demand. The paper for this facsimile was "specially manufactured for the work, having all the peculiarities of the original."
