De La Maniere D'Enseigner Et D'Etudier Les Belles-Lettres, Par raport a l'esprit & au Coeur (1740)

by Charles Rollin

10 ¼ x 7 ¾. In French. Published by Chez la Veuve Estienne, Paris, 1740. Early edition. First volume only. Bound in original full leather. Five raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration to spine with some damage to head and tail. Front hinge cracked but holding. Rear hinge starting and tender. Marbled endpapers with a few stamps on the title page. Stunning frontis of the author. Text block, with binder's red stain, is remarkably clean and bright. Nice, wide margins. In very good overall condition.

Charles Rollin (1661 - 1741) was a French historian and educator, whose popularity in his time combined with becoming forgotten by later generations makes him an epithet, applied to historians such as Jean Charles Leonard de Sismondi. Rollin's "Traite des Etudes" explains his method of teaching and studying belles-lettres. An important work in the history of teaching/education which contains ideas that were new and revolutionary at the time.
