Description

The Constitutions and the Synodical Decrees of His Diocese Constantien (translated) (1569)

by Mark Sittich von Hohenems

Full Title: Constitutiones et decreta synodalia civitatis et dioecesis Constantie[nsis] in Ecclesia cathedrali Constantie[nsis] Kalendis Septembris & sequentibus diebus, Anno D[omi]ni. M.D.LXVII. statuta / edita & promulgata, praesidente ... Domino Marco Sitico ... episcopo Constantien[sis] ... ; quibus adiecta sunt acta, seu ordo rei gestae, una cum caerimonijs & orationibus in eadem Synodo habitis

8 ¼ x 6 ½ x 1 ¾. In Latin. Printed by Dilingae: Apud Sebaldum Mayer, 1569. Complete. Bound in full blind-stamped pigskin over beveled-edge wooden boards. Some repairs to spine, perhaps centuries ago. Barely noticeable wormholes on edges. Fully functioning leather clasps. Bookplate, “Ex Bibliotheca Gutekunst” on front pastedown. Two Coats of Arms woodcuts on the title page. Save for some corner creasing and a spot here and there, text remarkably free from foxing, staining, browning, tearing or insect damage. Signs of some use, text underlining and marginal notes, which gives this find a special appeal. A sound and very pleasing copy that is in extremely good condition. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

Mark Sittich von Hohenems Altemps, born in 1533, was a German Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. During his life, Lutheranism spread, and his home area was devastated by the Thirty Years' War and plague. As a young man, he fought in the Italian War of 1551–1559. He also fought against the Ottoman Empire. He was appointed Bishop of Cassano by his papal uncle in 1560, then a Cardinal in 1561. Later that year, the cathedral chapter of Konstanz Minster elected him to be Bishop of Konstanz, where he conducted a diocesan Synod. He held various Governorships through 1568. He collected a considerable part of his income from these offices. He returned to Rome to participate in the papal conclave of 1572 that elected Pope Gregory XIII as well as the papal conclave of 1585 that elected Pope Sixtus V. The powerful cardinal died in Rome in 1595.
