8 ½ x 5 ¼. In English. Published by John Murray, London, 1817. Sixth Edition. Three Volumes. Complete. Volume I (First Series), 1817; Volume II (Second Series), 1823; Volume III (First Series), 1817. Bindings tight and secure with 3/4 brown calf leather trim. Five raised bands on each spine with gold gilt impressed designs and gold lettering on black and red morocco labels. Minor wear to extremities. Marbled boards, endpapers and text block edges. Previous owner’s bookplates on all pastedowns. Some minor areas of foxing mainly confined to endpapers and title page areas. Otherwise, in SUPERB condition. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)
Isaac D'Israeli (1766 – 1848) was a British writer, scholar and man of letters. He is best known for his essays, his associations with other men of letters, and as the father of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. He penned a handful of English adaptations of traditional tales from the Middle East, wrote a few historical biographies, and published a number of poems. His most popular work was a collection of essays entitled “Curiosities of Literature.” The work contained myriad anecdotes about historical persons and events, unusual books, and the habits of book-collectors. The work was very popular and sold widely in the 19th century
