Description

On the Highways of Europe (1893)

by Jules Michelet

7 ½ x 5 ¼. In English. Published by Cassell Publishing Company, New York, 1893. FIRST EDITION. Complete. Translated by Mary J. Serrano. A SPLENDID COPY, little changed from the day it left the press. Trivial soiling to cloth boards and a bit of spotting on edges of the text block. Otherwise, a fine and handsome copy, without any perceivable wear, and virtually as new internally. This title is not commonly seen in the marketplace. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

Jules Michelet (1798 – 1874) was a French historian. He was born in Paris to a family with Huguenot traditions. He was the first historian to use and define the word Renaissance ('Re-birth' in French), as a period in Europe's cultural history that represented a drastic break from the Middle Ages. Michelet deliberately threw his intimate self into his narrative, convinced that this was the way to achieve the historian’s ultimate aim: the resurrection (or re-creation) of the past. Such a resurrection must be integral: all the elements of the past—artistic, religious, economic, as well as political—must be brought back, intertwined, as they once were, in a living synthesis. His method, an attempt to resurrect the past by immersing his own personality in his narrative, resulted in a historical synthesis of great dramatic power.
