Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (1613 – 1684) was a theologian and French humanist. He is best known for his translation of the Bible, "Bible de Port-Royal," making it the most widespread French Bible in the 18th century. This original 17th century French Latin edition of “The Book of Job,” for sale here, was a book in the Ketuvim ("Writings") section of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), and the first poetic book in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. It addresses the theme of God's justice in the face of human suffering or, more simply, "Why do the righteous suffer?" It is a rich theological work setting out a variety of perspectives. It has been widely and often extravagantly praised for its literary qualities, with Alfred, Lord Tennyson calling it "the greatest poem of ancient and modern times.”
