Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC) was a Roman politician and lawyer, who served as consul in the year 63 BC. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. John Davies (1679 – 1732) was an English cleric and academic, known as a classical scholar, and President of Queens' College, Cambridge. As a student of Bentley, he edited several Ciceronian texts in the early 1700s. This is the last of six editions of Cicero's philosophical works edited by Davies and printed at the Cambridge University Press, They were intended as a kind of supplement to the celebrated edition of Cicero's prose compiled by Graevius. "The last of these Cambridge editions by Davies (says Harwood) is the best printed and is very correct. Dr. Davies was a learned and judicious editor.” The title translated, "About the Ends of Goods and Evils.” It is a philosophical book dealing with ethics.
