John Selden (1584 – 1654) was an English jurist and a scholar of England's ancient laws and constitution and scholar of Jewish law. He was known as a polymath showing true intellectual depth and breadth; John Milton hailed Selden in 1644 as "the chief of learned men reputed in this land.” During the progress of England’s constitutional conflict, he was absorbed in research. In 1650 Selden began to print the trilogy he planned on the Sanhedrin, as the first part of ‘De synedriis et prefecturis juridicis veterum Ebraeorum’ through the press, the second and third parts being severally published in 1653 and 1655. The aim of this work was to counter the use by the Presbyterians, in particular, of arguments and precedents drawn from Jewish tradition.
