Description

The Picture of Dorian Gray (1958)

by Oscar Wilde

7 ¾ x 5 ½. In English with an introduction in Russian. Published by Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1958. Spine a bit dulled and corners slightly worn. Light wear to joints and extremities, particularly head and tail. Binding without significant wear, and the leaves almost entirely quite fresh and clean. Corners of few leaves slightly creased, the text with virtually no signs of use. Still an appealing copy to be sure. (The image of the author we included on our website is NOT in the book.)

‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ is a Gothic novel and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of ‘Lippincott's Monthly Magazine.’ Fearing the story was indecent, the magazine's editor without Wilde's knowledge deleted roughly five hundred words before publication. Despite that censorship, the novel offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended the novel and art in correspondence with the British press, although he personally made excisions of some of the most controversial material when revising and lengthening the story for book publication the following year. This was his only novel.
