7 x 4. In Spanish. Printed by Sancha, Madrid, 1821. Early Edition. Four Volumes. Complete. The bindings have been nicely rebacked in full, mottled calf, with sturdy, supple hinges and gilt borders. Corners range from moderate bumping to worn through to boards. Flat spine with gilt compartments, with two black leather labels on each spine. Marbled edges and brown (died) end papers. Each front pastedown with a bookplate of C. Sewell Thomas and Marie Wade Thomas with a banner title of "The Poetry of Earth is Never Deep." Half-title page to each volume. End papers and text with virtually no signs of use or foxing. Fourteen engravings. Save for rather worn corners, at times, an otherwise very good set that is especially well-preserved internally. Le Sage (1668-1747) began his literary career translating Spanish works and thus came to appreciate the form, pioneered in Spain, of the picaresque novel, recounting the adventures of a likable rogue and satirizing the foibles of the times. In middle age, he turned to creating his own theatrical works and novels, and his acknowledged masterpiece is "Gil Blas." The story is set in Spain, and the feckless hero suffers many adventures and essays several careers (physician, courtier) before he learns compassion and achieves tranquility in a countrified life.
