Description

Our Mutual Friends (1866)

by Charles Dickens

Full Title: Works of Charles Dickens. Our Mutual Friends.

7 x 4 ½. In English. Published by Hurd and Houghton, New York, 1866. Household Edition. Part of a larger set, but complete story in four volumes. Tan calf over boards. Save for minor shelf wear shown on edges and lightly bumped corners, a FINE SET all around. Eye popping marbleized coverboards, pastedowns and edges in superb condition. Frontispiece opposite the title page (separated by tissue paper) to each volume. The text, to include paste downs and end papers, with no ownership markings, foxing, staining or even browning. NO SIGN OF USE, text block, perhaps, seldom opened. One of the cleanliest 19th copies on any subject, by any publisher, we have ever seen. Illustrations by F.O.C. Darley and John Gilbert. An incredible find of an early edition of Dickens.

Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812 – 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. He often suffered from insomnia and his night-time wanderings gave him an insight into some of the hidden aspects of Victorian London, details of which he also incorporated into his novels.
