Original leather covers, with fraying to corners and edges, and some scuffing; recent spine with raised bands, and gilt title label. With an early owner inscription: "Right Hon-ble Edward Lord-Vicount of Prestons book, Aug 13th, 1703.” No torn or missing pages; no writing or markings in the text; owner name on the back of the title page; original endpapers, with penciled note on front free endpaper. A solid and attractive rare book in very good overall condition.
A solid and attractive very rare 17th century book containing a fascinating collection of 16 English essays, speeches and tracts. Robert Cotton amassed the greatest ever private collection of English historical manuscripts, and this collection of significant English manuscripts was edited by James Howell and was first published in 1651. All but one of these 16 pieceshas a separate title page dated 1679.
