A later edition of a 1642 work of an important by Emanuele Tesauro (1592 – 1675), an Italian Marinist poet, whose obsessions with metaphor was influential throughout neo Latin verse that came after. In Umberto Eco's “The Island of the Day Before,” these themes are self-consciously taken up, through the character Padre Emanuele and his metaphor-machine. Tesauro was also a rhetorician, dramatist, and historian from Turin.
